I have extensive experience as both instructor and teaching assistant. In my 7 years at the University of California San Diego, I led classes of 16-20 students in courses such as ‘Health and Illness in Contemporary Society’, ‘Medical Sociology’, and ‘Genetics and Society’. In all of these courses, I foreground the relationship between factors such as public health policy, health systems, scientific knowledge and the political economy of medicine, with health. As a sociologist and scholar of global health, I push my students to think globally, transnationally and comparatively by exposing them to different health systems and cultures around the world, while critically analyzing the role of multilateral organizations in shaping global health concerns. Additionally, I emphasize the historicizing and provincializing of concepts such as ‘health’ and ‘medicine’ in my teaching, while underlining relationality in the production of knowledge. These core practices represent my commitment to gradually decolonizing knowledge and teaching in higher education. A brief teaching profile and sample syllabi are provided below.
